Limehouse Project Celebrate 40 Years

The Limehouse Project (LHP) marked its 40th anniversary with a grand celebration at Regent Lake, Bow Wharf, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The event highlighted four decades of dedicated service to underprivileged residents of Tower Hamlets, providing crucial support through advice, information, skills training, and initiatives to enhance civic participation.

Since its inception in 1984, LHP has positively impacted thousands of lives, breaking complex cycles of poverty and helping individuals realise their full potential. The anniversary event showcased the organisation’s enduring commitment to empowering ethnic minorities with the tools and confidence needed for economic independence.

Farida Yesmin, CEO of LHP, emphasised the organisation’s lasting legacy and its continued relevance in today’s challenging economic climate. ‘As we face the current cost of living crisis, high energy costs, and the transition to Universal Credit, our role in supporting the most vulnerable members of our community has never been more critical,’ Yesmin stated. ‘By empowering individuals, we strengthen families, communities, and ultimately, our entire society’.

Mayor Luthfur Rahman of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets attended the celebration, highlighting the crucial role of community organisations in addressing local needs. He congratulated LHP on its numerous achievements and ongoing impact.

Dennis Twomey, co-founder and Chair of LHP, shared the inspiring story of the organisation’s humble beginnings. ‘What started as an initiative to support homeless families has grown beyond our wildest dreams,’ Twomey reflected. ‘Today, we celebrate a success I never imagined possible.’Founded by former Headteacher Suzy Powlesland MBE, Dennis Twomey, and Myra Garrett, LHP has become one of London’s leading community initiatives.

The organisation supports over 6,000 people annually through vocational skills training, literacy programs, and social welfare advice, with a special focus on women and ethnic minorities.

As LHP enters its fifth decade, it remains committed to its mission of raising aspirations and changing lives, continuing to adapt and respond to the evolving needs of Tower Hamlets’ diverse communities.
