John, a 67-year-old widower, faced overwhelming financial challenges after the passing of his father, who was the main tenant of their family home. Living with his two young children in East London, John struggled to manage the household bills and navigate the benefits system due to speech difficulties and communication challenges.

Testimonial from John
Thanks to the Limehouse Project, I’ve navigated a very difficult time. The support and respect I received were unmatched. I now feel relieved and secure, knowing my children and I have a stable home and financial support.
The challenges
Financial instability
With his father’s passing, John was left responsible for rent and council tax, leading to financial strain.
Complex benefit claims
John was eligible for Pension Credit but had not claimed it. The process was complicated by the need to include his children in the claim.
Communication barriers
John’s speech difficulties made it challenging to communicate with agencies over the phone.
Our involvement
Personalised support
Our team provided emotional support and reassurance, conducting a thorough benefits check to assess John’s entitlements.
Guidance on claims
We guided John through the Pension Credit claim process, helping him write a letter to clarify his children’s residency status.
Housing Benefit and Council Tax relief
We assisted in reinstating Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction, ensuring they were backdated to relieve immediate financial pressure.
The outcome
Successful claims
John’s Pension Credit claim was successful and backdated, resulting in a one-off payment of £7,050.42. His weekly Pension Credit now includes additional amounts for his children.
Reinstated benefits
Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction were re-instated and backdated, providing crucial financial relief.
Increased confidence
With our support, John gained confidence in managing his financial situation and exploring further entitlements like Attendance Allowance.
